As mining continues to expand, coal is being considered as a source of power in the province's energy plan.
Rich coal deposits characterize the Tumbler Ridge area, Southwest of Dawson Creek. New coal projects are planned to start production in the Burnt River and other areas as coal prices pick up over the next couple of years. Dawson Creek continues to be the major service and supply centre for the District of Tumbler Ridge. Today, Western Coal operates the Wolverine and Brule mines and Peace River Coal operates the Trend mine in Tumbler Ridge.
